Election Round-Up

IN OTHER NEWS: Reliably lefty alt-weekly The Independent endorses (drum roll...) almost all Democrats! In Raleigh: Charles Meeker for mayor, Paul Anderson for District A seat on the City Council, and Russ Stephenson and Joyce Kekas for at-large seats. For Wake school board: Lori Millberg in District 1, Wanda Denning in District 2, Eleanor Goettee in District 9 and -- holding their noses -- Republican Patti Head in District 7. What's that? The races are nonpartisan? Oh, never mind then...

VOTE OR DIE: Another reason to vote early: You might get hit by a bus. WakePol was surprised to learn last year that voters who cast early ballots will likely still be counted, even if they die before Election Day. (Technically, being dead makes you ineligible to vote, but no one checks the early ballots for voters who have since died.) So hurry up! (And look both ways before you cross the street!)

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Two knights-errant tilt at Mayor Meeker's windmills. Republican J.H. Ross goes door to door, hits the malls, drives around town; Libertarian Steve Hilton waits for voters to come to him. Which one is the real Quixote? ... Local campaign literature goes to the dogs. Correction: Tommy Craven says that's another retriever, not an Irish setter. Hope that doesn't cost him any votes. ... Morrisville politicos worry that voters will see proposed water merger with Cary as a Triangle version of the "The Great Mistake of '98." Wake Forest wonders what the fuss is about. ... Fund raising relatively light in City Council races this year. ... Raleigh street bond includes $3 million to fix Hillsborough in front of N.C. State. Can we get more parking near Mitch's, too? ... Cary races boil down to debt vs. growth. Oh, and pools, too. ...

DON'T FORGET: Candidate bios here.
