Top Priorities if elected:
As a working mother holding down a job and raising a family, I have been frustrated with how little real help career politicians offer. I am running because I want to help change things. Throughout my life in North Carolina, I have worked with all kinds of people for real results – helping the church choir, assisting with hurricane relief, and in my current job at French/West/Vaughan. I want to take that same approach to improve schools, lower taxes and crack down on illegal immigration. We must reduce class sizes in our schools and improve teacher pay. Developers need to pay their fair share of taxes for growth to ease the financial burden on the community. We should hold businesses who knowingly hire illegal aliens accountable by revoking their state contracts. I will stand up for our local community against the career politicians for a better life in Cary.
If you could solve one problem in your community and/or district, what would it be?
I would make sure our children have the knowledge and ability to compete in the global economy. We need to pay our teachers a salary that reflects their true value in the community. We need to implement new programs to keep our teachers in our classrooms. We are not going to be able to maintain our standard of living if we don’t invest in our teachers and our children. Our children are not competing with kids from South Carolina for jobs anymore. Instead, they are competing with children half a world away. Preparing our children that challenge must be our number one priority.
Who is your political hero?
Governor Jim Hunt – After working on Hurricane Floyd housing recovery, I have the greatest respect for his abilities and vision.
Name a book, movie or piece of art that has inspired you the most and explain why.
“Cry Freedom,” based on the book of the same name written by John Briley.
To witness the power of great conviction in the face of seemly insurmountable odds moved me to become and remain involved in my community.
As a former journalist, I was first attracted to the story of Donald Woods – the newsman who follows the truth instead of the propaganda. In doing so, and with the support of his family, he must sacrifice great wealth and privilege to stand up for what he believes in. Conviction of that depth must be respected.
Watching Stephen Biko stand up for what he believed, ultimately giving up his life for it, reminds me that we are all called to do what is right.
