To take you inside the debate over the front page today, we talked about whether a story about the architecture of new and planned buildings in downtown Raleigh meant much to people who don't live or work downtown. What about people who live in New Bern, Chapel Hill or Durham, which has its own downtown projects? The answer was, in editors' view, that the story did indeed "travel": Raleigh is the state capital, and the larger questions about contemporary architecture and climate control and high-tech infrastructure versus grand design show up in new building design everywhere.
Other opinions welcome.
We ended up with all local stories on the front page, though a summary of the progress of Judge Samuel Alito toward the Supreme Court appeared at the top left corner of the page. You can find the front page PDF link on the newsobserver.com home page -- way down at the bottom on the right, under "Print edition."
