A dose of hockey sarcasm for Saturday

No wonder people in Montreal are sick of being described as "NASCAR fans" when people talk about their hockey team.

Consider this excerpt from the Montreal Gazette's story about Patrice Brisebois re-signing with the team:

"Brisebois took time from watching the NASCAR action at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to sign the deal yesterday afternoon."

Why places like Montreal -- or Toronto, where the TV network that carries the Leafs once demanded the Hurricanes move back a game time to accomodate a NASCAR telecast -- that only care about auto racing are allowed to have NHL teams is beyond me.

Luke, if I could figure out how to use emoticons in this post, I would send you a big "LOL" and a "Thumbs Up". Well played!

Your sociological comment is right on, Luke. Denizens of the two cities you mentioned once looked down on such cultural phenomenon from the States as the Laverne and Shirley Show. My estimation is that they've now embraced the concept.

Keep up your excellent work commenting on changing social mores and exciting hockey games in the two great countries, please.

Love this blog. As many times as I have read on the internet that "the only thing they understand is the zamboni driving in circles" or "they would understand hockey if people just skated in circles", a hockey fan in NC has to love Montreal getting a race.

And I don't even keep up or watch NASCAR.
