Upset of the millennium?

Appalachian State winning at Michigan has to be the biggest upset in the history of college football.

There have been upsets in title games — Miami over Nebraska in 1983, Penn State over Miami in 1986, Ohio State over Miami in 2002 — but nothing across levels, like a Chaminade over Virginia in college basketball, that has happened in college football.

The Apps, according to the AP, are the first Division I-AA team to beat a ranked Division I-A team.

Three thoughts on this shocker:

• ASU AD Charlie Cobb, a former assistant AD at N.C. State, is going to have a hard time finding another I-A opponent.

• Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, who was already in a tenuous position, might not make it through the weekend.

• What a debut for the Big Ten Network. The very first game on the new conference-run channel and it's a loss by its preseason favorite to a I-AA team.

great great accomplishment for app state. i'm so happy for them. however, concerning michigan, maybe it's about time the pollsters stop overrating them every single year. just like ND.

I watched the end of this fantastic game in the corridors of Ohio Stadium. The Columbus talk show hosts are having a field day with this one.

I'm a Tar Heel, not a Buckeye, but congratulations to the Mountaineers for this great, great win.

Awesome win, Apps!!

But let's not get carried away -- it's no Chaminade over Virginia. Chaminade was an NAIA team -- THREE divisions below No. 1-ranked Virginia.

Great win, and it may well turn out to be a monumental upset. But I'd rather wait to see how the season plays out before getting too excited about it. Just because a bunch of people thought Michigan was the 5th best team in the country before they had even played a game doesn't make it true. If Michigan winds up 3-9 this year, we won't be calling this the biggest upset in college football history.
