The return of Herb?

Arizona State opened its Pac-10 schedule on Thursday with a 62-54 win over Oregon. The Sun Devils are 11-2 under second-year coach Herb Sendek with NCAA resume wins over the Ducks and Xavier.

And this matters why?

N.C. State, at the RBC Center, is scheduled to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, March 21 and Sunday, March 23.

Given the NCAA committee's penchant for connecting storylines, is there any doubt, if given the chance, they would shuttle Arizona State to the "House that Herb Built?"

And before you argue "What about the pod system?", the NCAA sent a Pac-10 team (Arizona) to Raleigh in 2004.

Oh, and what a coincidence it would be, NCAA committee members (wink!) if Sendek's Sun Devils happened to be in the 8-9 game with No. 1-seeded UNC waiting in the second round.

I'm glad Herb is doing well out there. If he gets his team in the tourney, no matter where they end up, they will have earned it.

The press and opposing fans are already trying hard to build the Herb story, but, in reality, it doesn't matter what Herb does at ASU.

Herb did some good things for State in getting them from the basement to mediocre, but he never won ACC Titles like rebuilt programs like Wake Forest and Maryland did nor did he even make a big NCAA run like rebuilt Georgia Tech did.

If it is ok for Wake and Georgia Tech to run off multiple ACC Title winners and their winningest coaches of all-time, Odom and Cremins, State should get no flack for---after a DECADE---wanting more than coddling together just enough wins to get to the NCAA and make an early exit without any ACC Titles as a consolation.

Getting destroyed by the worst UNC team Roy will probably ever field (with 2 walk-ons starting no less) in YEAR 10 with a team of seniors and depth 10 YEARS-in-the-making was the final signal that it was time for a change.

Whatever Herb does at ASU is great, but it will never change what he did NOT do in the ACC. I'm sure Herb is happy he doesn't have to play Duke and UNC four times this year. All you can do is wish him the best where he is...

dead on steve. nice post.

as to the blog, I can't imagine State and UNC meeting in the 2nd round. I would love it, but no way IMO.

as for ASU. absolutely I can see that.

I live in AZ and I swear I hear more Herb news on this site than I do here.

Herb has left the triangle and I think he made a great move. The last ASU game I went to was pre-Herb and there were about 200 people in the stands for a conference game. Nobody was within spitting distance of our group. Crazy. The only expectation is up for ASU bball and Lute is already in his 70s. ASU's Xavier win really did throw me for a loop.

I would predict a regional possibility from the committee rather than at early round, but after what happened last year I'm very cool with giving Sid a chance.
