Krzyzewski names successor ... kinda

The most interesting thing to come out of the press conference introducing former Duke assistant Johnny Dawkins as the 17th basketball coach at Stanford was hearing Stanford athletics director Bob Bowlsby spilled the beans on Mike Krzyzewski's intentions for his successor at Duke

Bowlsby said one of the first people he spoke to about the open job at Stanford was Krzyzewski and that he asked Krzyzewski about both Dawkins, who was Krzyzewski's right-hand man for 11 seasons, and Duke assistant Steve Wojciechowski.

"At that time, Coach Krzyzewski said that Johnny was a likely successor to him [at Duke]," Bowlsby said.

[More:]

Krzyzewski, 61, will be in his 29th year at Duke in 2008-09. Bowlsby said Krzyzewski also said he may coach another decade.

Krzyzewski has never pinpointed who might take over for him or how much longer he will coach. He's long said he'll know when it's time to step down if he loses either his passion for it or his health.

Coach K could make a run at Queen Victoria's record for longevity unless Sir Paul McCartney gets there first. Then he could do like some East Coast baseball players and tack on some bonus years at Southern Cal or some place out in the sunny Pac-10.

Meanwhile, Coach Johnny Dawkins will be facing former N.C. State coach Herb Sendek whenever Stanford takes on Arizona State in Pac-10 play. This just in: when the taciturn Dawkins takes the floor against the stoic Sendek, the question will be not who gets in the last word but who gets in the first word!

That was not the most interesting thing mentioned since everyone assumed this was going to be the case. The fact Stanford actually asked about Wojo for a head coaching job is both interesting and downright hilarious.
